I live in NW Ohio and for about a month I have been spotting a very skinny, almost hairless creature, with a stick-like tail looming in my backyard. It is about the size of a small dog. I dont think it's a coyote or a fox because my cats would have been eaten by now. Any ideas?

It does sound like an Opossum. They can be quite hairless looking. Looks can be deceiving though as they are quite cool. They are slow witted, but they are the only native marsupial to live in North America.

Do not approach, as they have sharp teeth and can inflict damaging bites. Look from a distance!!!!

It's an opposum. Keep your garbage covered and your dog food inside. They LOVE dog and cat food.
