I am in my first trimester of pregnancy and I hurt my back pretty bad, the doctor prescribed be vicodens and I'm just curiouse if this could effect the baby. I'm not planning on taking them contiuously, just when I need them. My back really hurts and tylonal does not work very well.

if the doctor knew you are pregnant, and still rpescribed them, then i say you are fine. :) my ob prescribed me tylenol codeine during my pregnancy, and when that didnt work, vicodin (for 2 of my pregnancies actually) and both my kids are just fine. dont over do; as you said, only take them when you really really need the pain killer. checking with your ob on the risks/benefits might help put your mind at ease as well. good luck, hope you feel better!

As long as you take them as directed and don't take them for an extended period of time you should be fine. You dr. knows you are pregnant, right? If not, you may want to look it up online or ask your OB about it because there are different times in your pregnancy when certain drugs can be more damaging to the fetus than others. With that said, I was prescribed lortabs and tylenol 3 (with codeine) during my pregnancy and my little boy turned out just fine.

Use during pregnancy and lactation
The Food and Drug Administration has put Vicodin in category C. This category includes any and all drugs which have not been tested in pregnancies therefore the effects of the drug on newborns have not been determined. The FDA does ensure a warning to breastfeeding mothers telling them that Vicodin does pass into breast milk, which can have adverse effects on nursing babies.

I found it on Wikipedia...but I determine which meds I can take by what drug class they are in...I took a medical terminology class and my medical dictiornary states all the classes (theres 5 or 6) and how the drugs in those classes interact with pregnancy. Right now my doctor ok'eyd me to take Allegra for my allergies which is also a class C drug...although they havn't tested it or know the risks he told me that everyone that he knows that took allegra during pregnancy had a normal pregnancy and normal baby...talk to him and see what his opinion is since this drug hasn't been tested.

You can go ahead and take them. When I was about 38 weeks my doctor prescribed them for me because I was in constant pain. I was afraid to take them for the same reason but I finally gave in. Your doctor wouldn't prescribe you anything that can harm the baby.

Does your doctor know you are pregnant? If he does then I wouldn't worry about it. I never took vicoden when I was pregnant, but that's what they gave me after both kids and I took it when I was breastfeeding. The doctor isn't going to prescribe something that would harm the baby.

Narcotics taken as directed are perfectly safe in pregnancy. Because of chronic pain condition I took narcotics in small dose thru out my pregnancy. I gave birth to a healthy 6lb 10oz baby girl in 2005. Hope your back gets better soon.

From what I found on safefetus.com, it is safe. It's in the same drug class as tylenol (Class B, which is safe in pregnancy).

However! According to the site, "The risk category will be D only if used for prolonged period or in high doses at term." Category D is unsafe in pregnancy. You should talk to your OB about how often you can take the medication or if you should switch to another. Good luck.

Well they say the dr knows best but if it was me I would NOT take them especially during the first trimester...I didn't even eat chocolate during the first trimester cause you don't even know if your body is going to keep the baby or reject it till after the first trimester...Honestly every dr is different and my dr would not let me take anything but chloraseptic spay and vics vapor rub while I was pregnant...So its up to you but I wouldn't chance it just because I was in pain....Its not just about you its also about the baby now and having a baby is the most unselfish thing you will ever do....

I have taken them during the last 2 pregnancies they are fine. The Dr. would not give them to you if he knows your pregnant if it was not ok.

I was also given morphine.............

I used the pain pills for a severely broke patella during my pregnancy ( knee cap) My children are very healthy and smart.
