Yes you can jump start a lawn mower, just like a car! Please remember pos to pos/ neg to neg, and hook the dead battery first! It produces Hydrogen Gas (very flamable) so you dont want any sparks around it!
To recap; hook dead battery first red cable to pos post / black cable to neg post / then on the good battery hook the red cable to the pos post / neg cable to frame or any ground away from the battery.

When you are jump starting a lawn mower you have to be real careful not to touch the clamps to the metal body. There isn't much room and it is easy to allow one to touch. Otherwise it is just like starting a car. Just charge the battery it is safer and easier.

If the positive and negative poles are accessible on the battery--you can do a jump or a charger can get it going--red to positive--black to negative---but the battery is shot--buy a new one. Once they die--there is nothing else to do but replace it. Not the end of the world if you have the right tools and please do not touch the tools to metal while you work on the battery--bad bad burns--INSTANTLY !!!OUCH!!

Just because the battery is dead does not mean it is bad. It could just be low on water in a few of the cells.
