vtjames, are we fighting the terrorists or are we fighting the insurgency? next question, can we really fight global terrorism when we are bogged down in Iraq? Third question, is victory in Iraq defined by the eradication of terrorism as a tactic?

kevorkian, you are trying to muscle my question into something else, and i won't let you. I asked who had more to gain from a victory..those who want to leave, or those who want to stay? Meaning, those who want to leave will get to, once there is victory. Of course, if there is a victory, that means we have to leave (or at least it USED to mean that before 'misison accomplished') and the GOP can't continue to drag this out forever...

Define what would constitute a US "victory" and then I can answer.
Since we have no single common definition of "victory" -- in terms of what we ourselves are trying to accomplish -- there is no possible way to evaluate any course of action to determine if it matches that goal.
Which is why "staying the course" is almost meaningless -- because we have no course of action, since we have no defined goal. Thus "staying the course" only means moving blindly forward until we run into something.

The people who want to "stay the course" I think want to do so because it makes them *feel* like they are winning the War on Terror, even though such a war is not winnable.
The people who want to pull out want to do so because they *feel* like would have finally gained a victory over the Bush administration.
Unfortunately, I don't think either side has a real investment in future Iraqi victory. All they care about is pursuing the goal that they think leads to a win for *them*, but they don't care about rebuilding the Iraqi infrastructure and society.

Answer:Broad question...Amongst American politicians its a dead heat Libs need failure to achieve power and world chaos...Conservatives need victory to achieve power and a safer free world citizenry.
Shia Iran backs Sunni Iraqi's to avoid being surrounded on two sides with secular western leaning governments. They envision filling Saddams former role for the next say...Thousand years after cowardly liberals abandon the fight for freedom once again...When Those traitors pulled this in Viet_Nam, millions of civilians were murdered...This time the Death Toll Of Their Cowardly Treason will be far greater!

That's obvious. Those who want to stay are 'invested' in victory - or at least in staving off defeat - while those who want to leave are 'invested' in defeat, the more decisive and humilating the defeat, the better.
We're talking, of course, of political 'investment.' The returns thier hoping for are in the form of power - more of thier party winning elections, for instance.

Victory - the destruction of the terrorists- has ramifications for the entire world. Naive people who live in never never land do not understand the threats and dangers so it is up to the rest of us to defend them.

The major oil companies that Dick Cheney met with before 9/11, during his secret energy policy meetings, where they divided up Iraq's oilfields. Why do you think George is so adamant about not leaving, He does not want to make Dick mad, Dick might take him hunting.

The world. Lose and al queda grows, Iran grows in strength and ultimately we all pay the price in a far larger more expensive war (expensive in terms of deaths to Americans).
