They originated at exactly the same time .
Orca the Hun , conquered the land previously known as Sparrow in 1087 after a long and bloody war .
During his victory speech he asked his dishevelled army what the new land shoudl be called , unaware that a large chicken type creature had landed on his shoulder .
A clamour arose in the crowd which could have led to some civil unrest so Orca quickley went to unlock his sacred crowd pacifier , but alas , the lock was jammed .
His closest advisor , Sir Barrack the Bald , suggested turning the key . Orca misheard him and , thinking it was a name suggestion , hastily named the country TURKEY in an attempt to calm things down .
The crowd misunderstood and thought he was naming the bird .
Orca went on to lived a long and happy life in Turkey surrounded by Turkeys .

Modern birds evolved some 10000 years ago or earlier. Turkey, the country happened in only recent times. It was the center of the Ottoman Empire, but was it called Turkey then?

The country.
Thanksgiving History
The wild turkey (Meleagris gallopa) is native to North America and was a staple in the Native American diet. It was imported to Europe in the early part of the 16th century by the Spaniards via Turkey (the country.) It was confused in those early times with the Guinea fowl which also arrived via Turkey, and both birds were called turkeys in those days. When it was assigned its latin name in the 18th century, the name turkey still stuck. Native Americans called it peru with no reference to the country of the same name.

The animal, pretty much all animal species predate human civilization
answer #2:
it doesn't matter when Europeans started to encounter the animal or named it, the two species of turkey still existed before Thanksgiving.
