If I oay tax on cigarettes bought overseas AND outside the EU am I still liable for UK duty on any over 200 that I bring back?

If you buy you ciggies in the E.U. and they have that wee sticky duty stamp on them, you can bring back as many as you like. They are considered "duty paid". As long as you don't bring back a trailer load which you would have to explain!! If customs stop you, all you say is that they are for private, personal use. They are the ones who have to prove that you are planning to sell them on in the U.K. Have a fun holiday. Last trip I had, I brought 4000 ciggies!!!

Sure. Dutiable goods bought overseas, outside the EU, are still dutiable, regardless of whether or not you have paid a purchase tax in the foreign country.
