As the world's 11th or so greatest economy can't they defend themselves from some third-world decayed and starving despot? They seem to have a lot of high tech equipment and a lot of personnel.

They may have high-tech equipment, but make no mistake: the NK army is absolutely HUGE. The U.S. soldiers are there to provide a tripwire, if you will, so that the NKs couldn't attack without drawing the U.S. into the conflict. It's a way of hedging bets, I think.

In some of the answers I read some pretty stupid comments.. especially the one about the president being a war lunatic.. That to me, demonstrates how stupid and uninformed some people are. There is no treaty between the South and North Koreans.. only a cease fire. It was necessary for the American military to remain in South Korean after the cease fire so that they could protect the country from anymore aggression from the north. The only way that So. Korea could have survived was to have American Military stationed there. It is by treaty that the United States stays to keep the peace. Bush has nothing to do with it. The treaty was established by congress in the late forties or early fifties with the promise that we would protect them from attack. The Korean conflict was started by the north and backed by China.. two communist countries trying to over run the south. North Korea wanted to defeat the south and unify the country. South Korea was a growing democracy and the north was communist.. We honored the treaty and saved their butts.. and we still are.. the only way that South Korea has been able to develop technologically is by the presence of our military and us honoring the treaty. Look at the difference between No. Korea and So. Korea.. compare the two and you will see why we are there and why we must stay..

Because America is still deathly afraid of Communism and Kim Jong Ill is a little loopy.

Jake- We are in Germany because our troops are in the Middle East and can't always get the medical care they need down there, so they get flown up here. It's much quicker than say being flown to Walter Ried in Maryland. Also, this is a stop-over so that troops won't be dropped into the desert completely jet lagged, without proper equipment, and so they'll have a place to call home if they can't be sent all the way back to the US when they get a chance to go on leave.

Technically North and South Korea are still at war. South Korea is an ally and neither they or the rest of the world thinks that their forces could repel an invasion over the 38th parallel.

It's part of the Cease Fire Agreement between the US and North Korea. While the war ended there was no formal peace treaty so technically invasion could return. So we keep our soldiers guarding the DMZ

The issue is that North Korea believes they could conquer South Korea even though its unlikely they could. Seriously the North Koreans put nearly all resources available into their military and the only thing stopping them from "war" is about 55,000 American's in their way.
