I found innapropriate sites on our computer and my son says that he never went to them, but sometimes they pop up and thats why they have been showing up on the history in our internet browser. Is he lying or is it really possible?

we'll if u have a pop up blocker and it blocks pop ups then they surely wont appear in history, and finding inappropriate sites in history bar is not odd if you still want your son to prevent going on those sites download a porn site blocker or put up the sites in internet's blocked zone and set a password then he will not be able to visit those sites.

Depends on the pop-up. Some are designed to add themselves into the history. Other are not. So it is possible that a site which only "pops" as an ad was added into history.

Yes they do. When I was 14 I lost the internet for a month because the exact same thing happened to me.

Pop-ups do not appear as history. I guess he's in trouble now - sorry.
