The stereotype disadvantages both the person making the statement and the person it is being made about.

Stereotypes are an attempt to have the power & control of knowledge on a particular person or group. We all as humans fear the unknown and attempt to control this fear by labeling the unknown. Stereotypes leave no room for knowledge about an individual. It's like putting people in cattle pens so that we may have the satisfaction of knowing "i have them all figured out.

A stereotype is also a form of identity clarification. "S/He is this or that, I am not this or that" This also goes back to the cattle pen analogy, after having labeled all other pens, we try to find which pen we belong to.

the problem is stereotypes are inherently simplistic in nature, we as people are all each individually very complex creatures who will never be able to fit into any one pen for any period of time. Stereotypes attempt, but fail, to simplify humans down to one label rather than accepting each individual's unique complexity.

It damages the person being labeled, obviously, because the person is no longer given the benefit of the doubt, and the oppurtunity to exhibit his/her own self, not having it provided for him/her by an outside party.

It also damages the person making it because by nature the stereotype thrives on lack of knowledge. The person no longer seeks out knowledge of individuals, satisfied with their own "powerful" ignorance.

Disadvantages Of Stereotyping

There are advantages and disadvantages to stereotyping. The disadvantage is what you asked about though. The biggest one is about the black community during equal rights protesting. Before, everyone thought black people were dirty and stupid, and NEEDED to sit in the back fo the bus, or NEEDED to have a separate drinking fountain. We all (hopefully) know that's not true and it was a prejudice and a stereotype. That is a disadvantage because some of my closest friends are black and that couldn't be further from the truth.

The best example that I can think of is the racial profiling police officers exhibit when they are on duty. Because they think that one race of people is predominantly committing a particular type of crime, they may automatically search for any behavior that fits that particular stereotype for that particular race.

Stereotypes are not true most of the time---they MAY be true the majority of the time for the majority of that specific group of people. There are many examples where stereotypes have been disproven---there's the one about Russians drinking vodka all of the time and having a high tolerance for alcohol--- I definitely disprove that stereotype: I hardly ever drink and my preference is not for vodka.

Stereotypes are often based on biased views and generalizations and do not actually represent the majority of the group. Rather it represents what is displayed in the media (entertainment value skews results) and what society creates. Stereotypes disadvantage people because we automatically put labels on the people we meet before we even talk to them. This limits communication and perpetuates prejudices.

Look up 'conditioned response' and Pavlov's dog if you want to know why we stereotype. Its been conditioned based on our senses.

The worst kind of stereotypes(or discrimination) is reverse stereotyping. For some reason, it's considered okay by our society.

Well being black/African American people think you are ghetto, or in a gang and do drugs. being from Pakistan people think you could be a terrorist. but anyway. being Gothic or punk people think your a drugy and your a devil worshiper. being asian people think you are a nerd/loser. so stereotypes do disadvantage people. there are soo many more to chose from.

"Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you, as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox. Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a pure mind, happiness will follow you, as a shadow clings to a form."

The Buddha

stereotyping = a polluted and clouded mind clouded by judgment and preconceptions...
