The family of one of my co-workers came in today to eat lunch with him because it's his daughter's 5th birthday. I don't think I've ever wanted to slap some one as hard as I wanted to slap my co-worker when some one asked what she got for her birthday and she held up an iPod Shuffle. WTF is a freakin' FIVE YEAR OLD going to do with an iPod Shuffle?!? Hell, I'm 21 and I'm lucky to have my base-line cell phone! I had a Walkman and ONE cassett tape when I was her age and I was lucky to have that!

What do you think about kids getting such gifts at such young ages?

Mikester, she's FIVE! She just learned how to talk maybe two years ago! What the hell does she need with a damn iPod?!?

And WhyTF would I be jealous? If anything I'm pissed off! My point to this question is that kids today get everything they want and people wonder why they act so disrespectful! It's BS!

Princess Buttercup, you don't remember those cheap Walkmans that cost like $5-$10? And that cassette I had was made by my father and only had one song on each side. In '91 Walkmans were pretty cheap depending on where you got it from.

There's no way I'd buy my 5-year-old an mp3 player that costs $80+

First, Parents are way too concerned with being buddies with their kids than in being parents.
Second, the technology is raising the kids. We stick i-pods in their ears and DVD players in their faces so we don't have to talk or deal with them. Car trips now are about isolated individual in their own zone - no interaction, no people skills, no talking. Then we wonder why they don't communicate or become "distant."
Thirdly. it's all about staying entertained and keeping up with the Joneses. So now unless something is personally entertaining or self-gratifying we give it no mind. WE have taken our individuality to the point of isolation. In a world full of people and communication devices we are dying of loneliness.

Call me jealous, but that is one of the many things that piss me off. I'm a 16 year old musician and I still don't have a decent mp3 player. I can't believe a 5 year old is handed an iPod so he/she/it can listen to popular music just to "fit in" and end up breaking the thing in a few weeks. I thought I was the only person annoyed by this. Anyway, those spoiled little bastards are going to get fat in the near future from being spoon-fed all the time.

I think it's nuts! They kids don't need a personal music player at 5! What kind of music are they listening to? If they know how to use the computer, then they have open access to a lot of tunes inappropriate for their age. Just like kids in grade school don't need cellphones or text messaging devices. All these electronic toys are making kids more anti-social and cut off from the real world. Yes, our world is becoming more and more technologically inclined, but there are more important things in life than having the newest toy. I guess all you can do is teach your kids what you feel is important and you have to deal with how others raise theirs.

Now that's some bull-ish! I had a little record player and some Strawberry Shortcake records. I didn't get a Walkman until I was like 13 and I had to do yard work to get that! I bet my kids won't get a damn iPod, unless they get a JOB and buy one. I didn't even have a TV in my bedroom til I was 15!

Jeez, you act like she's never going to get older. She'll grow into it. Plus, you act like this is some sort of travesty. Get with the times, lady. We live in a material world where the gap between rich and poor is constantly widening, so it doesn't surprise me one bit that five year olds these days have pockets full of ipods and cellphones instead of yoyos and lollipops.

I know this won't get best answer because I'm not agreeing with you, but whatever.

at five you had a walkman? when you were five, those were the bomb! those were considered the ipods of the day. so apparently your parents got you what was "in" and what would make you happy. with your OWN words you admitted that at age five you got a walkman....so what's the difference? the time and technology has changed but apparently the parenting hasn't. your parents got you a hip "rad" walkman at age five. and are you spoiled rotten? well only your husband, or boyfriend can answer that.

I don't understand people these days! Younger children are getting stuff that I didn't get at my age. Like they are getting cell phones, lap tops, computers, mp3's or ipods. Its crazy and they wonder why they act like they do when they get older and want more bigger and expensive things such as cars! <3

The kid probably JJUST wanted it and she got it. A lot of parents spoil there kids rotten. There is going to be a long road ahead of her getting everything she wants even though it's inappropriate which will eventually turn into a warped sense of entitlement when she's out in the real world. I see it happening all the time.....

It's ridiculous. I know of a 7 year old who got an ipod shuffle for her birthday (when she turned 7). What a 7 year old needs with that, I don't know.
