Most places, a child must be at least 16 years old to be left alone overnight. Daytime is generally 12 years old, although I know people who leave 10 year olds home alone for brief periods.

The key thing is if the child is 16 years old cognitively. What this means is that if the child was born 16 years ago, but functions mentally as if he/she were 10 years old, by Child Protective services guidelines, that child is generally considered 10 years old. The age is based on cognitive ability, not how many years ago they were born.

I'm hoping this makes sense!

Some states do not have laws.. its based on the childrens capability to handle certain situations. Generally a child should not be left home alone who is under 12. Here in indiana the law is 12,, and if a child wishes to babysit another child it is 14.

There really is no legal age...although there should be since some parents seem to think seven years old or younger can be left alone. Anyway...there is no "legal" age to be left home alone. You have to use your best judgment.
