Chances are your heat element on the dishwasher went out. When these elements go, or arc out sparking and a very distinct, unique smell are common. Normally the smell is from the broken element coming in contact with the plastic drain screen on the bottom of the dishwasher tub. This problem is easily fixed but if you're not that mechanically inclined you may want to let someone with some experiece take care of the problem. Is your dishwasher a high end model? Is it old and in need of replacing anyways? An element is not that expensive to buy, less than $30 in most cases, but if you have to call out a certified tech to replace it obviously you will pay substantially more. I've changed out hundreds of heat elements in dishwashers & ovens and it really only takes a few minutes to complete the job.

Not enough information to give you an answer. How old is the dishwasher? Is there something inside that touched the heating element? Burning plastic smell is common if something was washed that wasn't dishwasher safe.

With the price of dishwashers what they are. I would say to just go ahead and get a new one. At least that way you save the cost of the repairman.. With burning plastic, the repair cost would be too high.

Sounds like the motor has packed it in.Could have happened from a seal leaking allowing water to get in the motor. It may cost between 1 and 2 hundred to get it replaced. If the machine is over 5 years old I would replace it.

Shut off the power and remove the front kick panel and take a flashlight and look inside to see what is shorting out. It might just be a burned wire or something else simple, otherwise you might get some clues from http://appliancequickfix.com/ as to what else to check

Depends on the age and condition of the unit. Do not operate it until something is done. Turn off the power supply to the unit at the breaker or unplug it if it is a corded unit.

There's a few things you can do, and one would not to turn it on again,it'll be a 'shocker'. I think you got some water where your not supposed to. Just get it checked out...
