Your battery is dead ...or you have very loose terminal connections on your battery. The fact that you saw smoke when you tried to start it tells me that your terminals are not tight. This would make the car behave like it has a dead battery. Tighten the terminal connections and try to start it again... it should start. If it doesnt then you have a dead battery.

First, smoke from under the hood is bad-whatever you did to make that happen, don't do it again.
The obvious is that the battery is dead. Try jump starting it. Then determine why it is dead. If not that the problem is in the starter/solenoid circuit, which includes the wiring, none of which can be troubleshot on the internet.
If you know nothing about repairing cars you must know a good mechanic, or you will be walking very soon.
Seriously, the first sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting the results to change. Continuously turning the key or holding it in the "start" position could start a fire. The bad news is that the bad part may not be the one that burns....

If there is smoke, then smoke is an indication of a fire. An electrical fire is typically caused by one of two things: the arcing of electricity across a gap which causes sparks which in turn burn objects in the same area or a short which means that the 12V of your battery is going directly to ground and the high current is burning the device that is being shorted.
In either case, replacing the battery will not solve your problem and it will damage the new battery. Tightening the cables will not solve your problem. Do not attempt to jump the car off with jumper cables as you will short the battery of the car that is helping you.
It is probably a short in the solenoid or starter causing the problem. Have it checked by a mechanic.
Good luck.

The clicking that you hear is the solenoid switch. That means that the switch is working properly. If the click was just one click when you turn the key to start, and one click when you release the key, then the starter is bad. If there were many clicks very fast then the battery is weak, or you have a bad connection. The smoke was probably from the bad connection when the cable got hot when you were trying to start the car.

By your symptoms it could be
1.Battery is toast.
2.Where the battery cables attache to the battery sometimes they get corroded and don't allow the current to pass through this too will cause a click click.
3.Could be a faulty solenoid for the starter.
I would tend to think it is either #1 or #2. Look to see if the battery terminals are all white and dirty looking . If they are disconnect them and wash with water and baking soda. Then take some coarse sand paper and clean the inside of the cable connectors and also the battery posts. Hook up again and try it.

Battery with low voltage (should read 12.5 with a volt meter with motor off) and or a bad starter Bendix (starter drive).
Be sure all battery cables are clean tight and secure.
If the battery is three yrs. old or more it could be the cause. Be sure all cells are full of distilled water and charge it for 12 hra @ 2 amps. with an automatic battery charger.

Click is probably a dead battery or a soelenoid problem.
Find a friend who knows a bit and jump start; and get the electrical system checked if it turns over.
If not it's tow truck and mechanic

I think you have a bad starter. Its not your battery. So don't try jump-starting your car. You will need to repair your starter because it wont start no matter how much you try (and you will continue to hear the clicking noise). Unless its stick shift than you can push-start your car.

Turn your key to the ON position(don't try and start it), and if all the warning lights come on and it dings like usual, your battery should be fine and its your cables or starter you should check. If nothing happens, then its your battery.
