Some folks have a closed mind to anything they didn't think of.
As for me, I care less about the thumbs down - sometimes it even makes me grin.
What I think is cool, is when I get no thumbs at all when all around me they're both up and down. I'm guessing that the answer I gave made everyone think so hard; they forgot to "thumb me".

Sometimes I give a thumbs down to very long answers. I like clear, concise answers.

I just went through a few of your answers and gave you thumbs up. I hope that makes up for the inconsiderate folks that gave you a thumbs down.
Actually most of your answers are well thought out...not that I agree with them all but at least you took your time and gave them an honest effort.

Some people give a thumbs down for answers that express an opinion they do not agree with. I think also a few people give thumbs down to everything they read...

Partisanship and sometime question stalkers, someone you might have really made mad in the past keep seeking you to do a thumbs down.

Maybe a person disagrees with the premise and finds the over-all answer unsatisfactory and/or is completely against it personally. A lot of people take things way too personally on here. Generally, if there's something I like in an answer (even if I disagree with parts or most of it) I'll thumbs-up because the answerer brings up a good point.

You're on the politics board. How can anyone post "thoughtful" answers on this site?

One might also wonder why questions that have absolutely nothing to do with politics get a pile of answers.

Could it possibly be because not everyone agrees with the answer? An answer can be "thoughtful" but that doesnt mean everyone has to agree with it. Why do you people get so offended by others freedoms to disagree? It is just yahoo for crying out loud

Often because people vote based on whether they agree with the answer -- not based on whether the answer is logical or consistent, and not based on whether the answer actually addresses the question.
In other words, to many people, it's a popularity-based vote -- while to others, it's a quality-based vote. Two different metrics.
And some people cannot make the distinction between quality and their personal agreement with the statement.
