If I try to plug headphones into my computer, it automatically sets all sound to "Mute," and there seems to be no way to fix it until I've unplugged the headphones and restarted the computer. It's REALLY annoying... can anyone tell me how to fix this, or do I have to accept the fact that I can never use headphones?

Actually, I sometimes can't restore sound even after I restart the computer. It's very confusing...

I have been clicking the Volume Control... that's how I know it's on Mute. The problem is that there is no way to "Uncheck" the Mute boxes once I've put headphones in.

What kind of headphones are these ? Are they a USB headset by any chance? If so these use a seperate sound driver program, so you will have an alternative volume control set to check.

Peronsally I prefer a small switch box with puch button to select speaker / headphones. Nothing to unplug ever.

Also olugging headphones into a normal speaker/headphone socket on a soundcard will not change volume settings, as there is not a sensor on the socket

How can you tell that it's been set to Mute? What you need to do is to double click the "Volume Control" icon at the bottom right of your screen.. If the checkboxes are checked, make sure that you uncheck them and adjust your volumes.
