The distinctive, almost grating, yet curiously addictive high-pitched squeal? What the heck is that? Synthesizer? Guitar? Bagpipes?

It sounds like a synthesizer to me, because of the cut off portamento - the way it changes between notes instantly couldn't be done on a real instrument. It could be a guitar synthesizer (you can have synthesizers for lots of different instruments), but it's more likely to be a keyboard synthesizer due to the way it's played. The one at about 3:15 IS a guitar however. You're right it does sound a bit like bagpipes - mostly due to the timbre of the sound - though I think it's more likely to be a combination of different synth sounds, a sawtooth, organ and possibly bagpipes is what I'd go for.

There is a kids toy music stick and sounds JUST LIKE this! I have been looking for the name or pic but have not had any luck! It was about 18-20 in. long and had a neck like a very small guitar. It had a small speaker at one end. The keys were just pressure sensitive under a plastic cover so you could really slide the notes! I got to play it and it was very interesting. Its sound is like the Icky Thump breaks!!
