An XVIIIth century French philosopher and author who was imprisoned under three different regimes, mainly for being one of the more offensive writers anyone had ever seen up to that point.
His books, the 180 days of Sodom, Justine, the philosophy in the boudoir and others, were infamous for depicting cruel sexual acts and other acts of debauchery in a graphic manner. We derive the words sadism, sadistic, etc... from his name because of these works. In addition to this, the books portray a philosophy of moral relativity in which Christianity is condemned as hypocritical and naive, and which places the highest value on self-gratification.

The Bastille had but one famous prisoner the night of the storming and his name was ... Marquis de Sade. Is that lucky or what? Had he been on the outside, he might have met the same fate as Queen Marie Antoinette.
