NS has an all pervading influence and acts at all the levels to determine the fitness under a particular situation.Selection on the basis of phenotype is called sexual selection.NS selects majority of favourable variations. Along with these there may be some disadvantageous variations. The survival of the organisms depends upon the majority of favorable variations.

Natural selection is the preferential survival of some members of a species with a favourable genetic complement.

Because there is an alteration of the frequency of some genes within this population, it creates a differential expression of genotypes and phenotypes in subsequent generations.

So the natural selection itself has an effect on both the genotype and phenotype of successive generations, but it actually acts directly on the gene pool of the species.

So A is the best answer.

Natural selection acts on the phenotype of each individual. However, the phenotype is simply just the expresion of individual genotypes within a population. All of the genotypes of a species combine to form the gene pool. So, ultimately, natural selection acts on the gene pool, by changing the frequency of individual genotypes, by the interaction of the environment with the expression of each of those individual genotypes (the phenotypes).

I guess A, B and C are all correct. Although, the most direct effects are on the phenotype, and the ultimate effects are on the gene pool. I'm guessing that your instructor/teacher wants what natural selection *ultimately* acts on, so I'd say A is most correct.
