If the SPF is 4 then you can stay out 4 times longer than you would ordinarily be able to hang out in the sun...if its SPF 10 then ten times longer...15 then 15 times longer etc...

That is what the SPF tells you, 50 protects for much longer than 5. They tell you to re apply every couple of hrs or so, or after sweating or swimming.

Only a few hours. Sunscreen is not just a chemical that's "black" (opaque) to ultraviolet light. It reacts with the skin. The effect only lasts a while.

Be sure to read the labels. No matter how often they say to reapply, always reapply after you get out of the water. Sunburns are the worst!
