Normally, if there's NOTHING else but friendship on both sides then there shouldn't be the awkwardness.
Are you sure there aren't some feelings there on the guy's side?
Or maybe he thinks, if you are dating some other guy, that he will be pushed out as your friend, that the other guy may not want him around or you may not have time for him, if you're dating someone.
I guess, I always prefer the direct approach and would talk to my guy friend about it. Something like, "I'm getting the feeling you're bothered/annoyed by my dating other guys and just wanted to check in with you about it."

Men do not have friendships with women. They are keeping you around so they can make the move when you break up with the other guy.
If you doubt this find another guy that is a friend, take off your cloths and pull him in to bed. Do you think he will say no?

I don't care if a female friend of mine dates, gets married, switches teams...whetever. I'm there as a friend and as a friend any decision they make that changes a part of their life, I need to be there just as I always had.
But in your case, they probably had feelings they didn't address.
So I can understand that some men have these issues but I don't understand why they do so.
But I have the same problem with women. I have friends that got distant when I met someone.

If you talk to a man he thinks he has a chance of holding your hand and skipping through fields of poppies.....men will always do this - always -expect nothing different, until you meet a well balanced individual of course, possibly one that has had a girlfriend!!!!!

If the guy gets annoyed, it means you were wrong and that there were feelings there on his part which were more than simple friendship.

Haven't you ever heard that men and women can't be "just friends". There is always some sort of attraction from at least one towards the other. He probably likes you (romantically).

Might feel threatened and afraid that he'll lose your friendship. Think it works the same both ways at times.

Alice b is closest me thinx.. Men get jealous even if he dose n't fancy you massively. He still thinks you should like him and will get jealous and awkward around you because you kinda rejected him. That's hard thing to take, who does likes rejection on any level..??

Because they secretly like you and they're jealous and like spending time with you. Maybe I watch Kim Possible to much but that's the best I've got.
