Can one Presidential candidate run for President and also be the running mate of another Presidential candidate?

In the current system, yes. This works because you can run against someone in the primaries and not win your party's nomination as President. Now you can run as the nominee's running mate. During the primaries you were running against each other but once the nominees are selected, you can run as mates.

Case in point, John Kerry and John Edwards in 2004.

Running mates have generally be chosen after the primary election so if you did not win the primary you could then be chosen as a running mate. Hope that makes sense. I know what I am trying to say but just can't get it down right. Short and simple though, yes.

By the specific wording of the Constitution (12th Amendment, 20th Amendment), yes it would be possible.

But they could not serve in both positions.
