We are new to this whole thing of living on our own, and our air system ran out of freon and it is deathly hot. I don't want to get ripped off, so can anyone help me?

Because, of their license, A/C contractor can not just add freon. They have to find the source of the leak and fix it before adding freon. Expect to pay $100 service call and about $30 per pound of r22 (typically 3 lbs) plus the cost of any parts. Worst case:
Typical problem is inside coil leak - could be up to $2000 to replace (cheaper than fixing).
Unlikely outside compressor could be $4000 to replace.
Best to get second estimate, if either is found to be aproblem.
