The answer depends on what type of vehicle you drive and how old it is. If you have anything from the last decade then no, putting it in neutral or reverse while driving will not cause damage. Most newer vehicles rely on a computer driven process to control the transmission. Making it impossible for you to engage the reverse gear while moving forward. Putting it in neutral has no effect really....just disengages the gear system from the engine flywheel.
I'm assuming you're asking because this happened by accident while driving? If this is the case and you experienced no shudder, grinding, or engine shutdown you have nothing to worry about. It is possible to shove an older vehicle into reverse while moving forward, the linkages are all mechanical. When this happens however the forces of the engine/tranny combine to quickly stall the car.
Some damage will be done by halting the drivetrain in such a violent manner, the level of damage is determined by how fast the car was moving/how fast (RPMs) the engine was moving.
On a final note if you've got a newer vehicle chances are pretty good no damage was or would be done...although I don't recommend it. If you've got an older vehicle the damage done would have been noted immediately...the shudder alone would've tipped you off.
Hope this helps!

Putting it in Neutral, is fine anyway mode your in. If your driving forward or just even rolling forward and you don't have the clutch pressed(Talking about a Manual type transmission for the Clutch) in you can say good bye to your transmission.

Neutral will not hurt the trans or motor. Reverse can cause catastrophic failure and damage to the transmission. The motor will survive.

Most cars have a reverse lock-out, but just in case, I wouldn't try it, if it did happened to go in reverse at speed, the rear or front wheels would lock up and send you into a spin : (

If you are driving down the road in a forward gear like say "drive" and suddenly reached down and shifted into say" reverse" most likely your transmission would EXPLODE!!!internally.

neutral is fine but as the guy said before me reverse will cause major malfunctions. a trans replacement will cost upwards of 2g unless you can do it yourself. play it safe stop before ya shift into reverse
