See I'm a teacher and I always ask what the kids find funny coz I want to know. If I too think its funny then I will laugh along, if not then I just go yeah well that's well interesting!
I know in a regular classroom the teacher is the teacher and the pupils must do as they are told but in my class, I get teachers coming into my class to tell ME off in front of the kids!! I never understand that, coz I then stand there with a smirk on my face while they're talking to me feeling like a 15 year old again and me and the kids are in stitches on the floor as soon as the teacher walks out!!
What a crazy world we live in!

For most teachers, it's not a rhetorical question. It is merely asked to draw attention to the behavior and the correct it. It is old school teaching techniques.
The teacher may also ask you to share the joke. Another old school technique. Both of these are usually ineffective and really just piss the kids off.
What I do is stop teaching until the laughing stops. Then I continue the lesson.

The point is to put you on the spot by making YOU answer for your own actions. To put the responsibility back on you to explain what is so funny, which usually cannot be done, so the student is embarrassed in front of the class.
I would compare it to when God asked Adam in the Garden "Who told you that?" in order to make "Adam" answer for himself. Of course, God would already know the answer, but the point was for Adam to acknowledge and admit himself what choices he had made and what he was thinking.
P.S. The funniest thing I remember from school that couldn't be explained to the teacher was two girls laughing at a T-shirt worn by a student on the swim team that said "Breast stroker"

Sometimes it's irritating. I've taught English for five years to 16 year olds in Switzerland. If I said something in German - like explaining exactly what they had to do for homework, occasionally one of them would laugh at my pronunciation. Had I laughed at their mis-pronunciations I'd have been hysterical before the end of every lesson. Teachers are humans too!

It comes from "The Teachers handbook of stupid questions and quotes" that all trainee teachers are given on induction day. It's very similar to "The parents handbook of stupid questions and quotes" (this is presented at the hospital after the birth of your first child) which contains the all too familiar - "When you fall and break your leg don't come running to me" and my all time favourite, when you're being told off as a child and crying, and you're told - "I'll give you something to cry about" ?????

Because school aint supposed to be funny !! so when somebody laughs it confuses people because they think"what could somebody be laughing at" so they ask if you think something's funny cause they don't know what it could possibly be...get it ?

They really don't care if you said something funny. That is a dry, sarcastic admonishment to shut up.
