There is so much that the movies can't fit in, you would be missing out alot if you went straight into the 3rd book.

If you think you'll read seven books and get to the end, that's the best way. But shorcutting around the first two books wouldn't be that bad. I would recommend reading the end of the first two books if you can get them at the library or from a friend. That should fill you in on the details you need for future books--as Dumbledore usually chats with Harry and goes over what they learned that year, and clears up any part of the story that Harry didn't understand.

I wouldn't recommend doing that with books V and on. It is noteworthy that Order of the Phoenix was the longest book and the shortest movie--and that is the one where Harry starts getting his thoughts about what to do with his life together.

Ok, first of all, Harry Potter isn't just for "14 year olds" or kids. It's for everyone of ALL ages! Anyway, I think you should read the books. They are wonderful. I read all of the books before the movies came out. My husband however had watched most of the movies before he read the books. He said he couldn't believe how many wonderful things he was missing out on and he was so glad to read the books. We still like the movies, but they are nothing like the books. Give the books a chance. If you like the movies, you will most likely LOVE the books!

you'll understand what's going on because the movies cover the basics. However... the movies have to cut out A TON of info. If the movies were going to include everythign that's in the books they would each be 6+ hours long. I suggest that you start reading from book 1. The first 2 are short and they're all incredibly easy and quick to read. Once you see all the extra detail and events that were cut from the movies you'll be glad you did.

No, you probably won't miss too much when it comes to the first two books. But as the books got longer they had to cut some of the book out so that the movie wasn't too long. Those first two books really aren't very long. You could probably read them in a few hours, you should go back and read them. That way you can say you have read them all! Good Luck!

the first 2 movies are very well done. little things here and there are missing but you could start from book 3, it wouldn't be too bad, but I'd still recommend reading the first 2 just to see the little details that the movies missed.
as for the rest of the movies so far, do yourself a favor, read the book but then forget everything you just read because otherwise they will be a disappointment. i know i sure was like wtf? when i watched the third one and it got much worse from there. i really hope they get a good director for the last 2 movies otherwise it will be really ridiculous

You could probably get through but the books are so much more detailed and you get to know the characters so much more! They are a quick and easy read so I'd say read 1 and 2 before going on to 3 and the rest

the movies are not totally different from the books...the movie just takes the most most most important part from the books...i recommend that u read it because there are many little details that will become a great detail...like for example, if a character is mentioned once in the previous book and u mite think oh, he (or she) is just a minor character...when u get to the 4th, 5h, 6th, or 7th book, that minor character might become a major character...every details count...u can just read the 3rd book, ull prolly get most of it, but maybe not all...i recommend u to read the first and 2nd book or get summaries...

You can start at the third book and you will be good. I wouldn't encourage to just watch the 5 movies and start off at the sixth book. You will miss a lot of details important to the plot of the sixth.

I would start at the beginning, because while the movies were okay, there is a lot more in the books that you will need as you go through the series.
