Currently I have a desktop computer. I plan to buy a laptop in the near future and I would like to connect them to a wireless network. The thing is, I know nothing about networks. I don't even know where to begin. I just want to be able to connect to the internet and share files between the two computers. Can somebody please help? I am completely lost. I'm not sure what kind of laptop I want and I don't know what I need to connect it to my desktop computer.

My desktop has Vista. I also just added more RAM a few weeks ago. I went from 512 mgs to 2 gigs.

This question gets asked several times a day. Check out some of the other yahoo answers or this site:

To set up a home network you need a broadband internet connection and a wireless router. Your router comes with instructions, and you can always call their tech support for help; they're good at setting up your initial network.

Work with the desktop first, and connect it wired to be sure you have everything working.

Then connect wirelessly with your laptop to be sure your wireless is ok. Consider securing your wireless. (Instructions come with the router.)

Then you need to enable each computer to see the other and enable file sharing. I'm guessing the desktop is xp and the laptop will be vista. There are some things to do to enable this. See the following:

First get a wireless router, they cost between 20-40 bucks now are are super easy to set up through a wizard when u plug it in. I would suggest something cheaper for the laptop since I don't think you need anything crazy, ask at a computer store for something basic. Next and final run the Network setup wizard in the control panel on both pc's and you are all set!!!

Assuming you want to use both your PC and laptop on the internet, you'll need to get yourself a router.

Your DSL/Cable Modem cable will plug into the router. Your PC will plug into the router as well. Your laptop will 'connect' to the router wirelessly..or you can run a wire (ethernet cable) from the laptop to the router too.

Either way, both computers will be able to access the internet simultaneously.

To share files between your computers, you'll need to setup print and file sharing on the computers.

Your router documentation will explain fully how to connect your devices.

Here's a real good article from PCWorld explaining the process. http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2001p154id68763.htm

Good luck!

all you need is a router (wireless capable) and an ethernet cable (network cable) for your desktop.

From then on, its a piece of cake. Connect the network cable that your internet provider brought into your home to your new router (WAN port). You will most probably have 4 other empty ports. one of them goes to your desktop computer and the router will broadcast wireless to your laptop.

Buy a Linksys wireless "G" router. Don't even need the "speed-booster" model. These are about $50 and are very easy to set up. Make sure the laptop you buy is compatible with "G". Have a great day! ;-)=
