And a Dauer 962 is faster than everything already mentioned... the problem with a question like this is how to define "fastest," and then how to decide what cars you wish to include.
On the first, is it simply top speed? Acceleration? Quickest time around a racing circuit? Or something like quickest 0-100 and back to 0? All are valid performance measurements where a car in any individual test would be "fastest," yet you could take a group of fast cars and have a different one excel over the others in each area.
And then which cars? Any car whatsoever or just factory built cars from acredited manufacturers? Cars that are not steet legal? etc. There is ALWAYS something faster out there.
The Veyron currently has the claim to "Fastest" by it's claimed performance in a few catagories, but there are no shortage of cars out there which could out perform it. The Mclaren held the claim for a long time too, though as with the Veyron, there were also many cars at the time (and since) which have a massive performance advantage in almost all areas.

Andrew is wrong, Speaking about production cars, looking at top speed as the fastest (not 0-60 or 1/4 mi for quickest).
The fastest car in the world is th Veyson:
Bugatti Veyson 253.2 MPH since mid 2005
Daur 962 252+
Koenigesegg CCR 244+ was the fastest for a month
Saleen S7 250 + (fastest made in the USA) 2006
Mclaren F1 242.14 was the fastest car in the 2005
Ultima GTR 231+
Lingenfelter Corvette 226+

The Buggati Veyron is the fastest production car in the world at around 252mph beating the McLaren F1and stealing its title but to be honest i actually prefere the Veyron even though it is more expensive at £1,000,000 but it just looks so cool and it has imense power at 1000bhp stock from a w16 engine with 16 radiators to keep it cool.

Actually, the Bugatti Veyron isn't the fastest anymore. The Ultima GTR is now. http://www.automotoportal.com/article/10_Worlds_Fastest_Cars

Do you mean out of the factory?
Because I would think the fastest was the Thrust SSC, which broke the sound barrier. But that is hardly a factory car.
I believe the fastest factory car is the Bugatti Veyron.
But as others have said, do you mean in a straight line or around a track?
