Tranny is most often a term used like an umbrella to cover as many people as possible and usually doesn't do a very good job of it.

Shemales like their male parts but also have a need to express their feminine side and usually take Hormone to grow breast. They can be Gay or straight. But need to express themselves this way.

Transvestites receive gratification by the wearing of women's clothes generally don't find it necessary the change their bodies with hormones.

Transsexuals have the needs and desires of the opposite gender (Yahoo/Google transsexual/brain sex for a better explanation) the can be Male to Female or Female to Male. A common misconception is that we are homosexuals this is wrong. We have a problem with our gender first. Our sexual orientation comes after our gender ID. We can be Bisexual, homosexual or straight.

they're all sort of insulting in their own right. First, a person can be transsexual, but to be polite, refer to them as a trans man or woman or person if used generically. Shemale is traditionally used to refer to pre-op transexual women working in the porn industry. I don't know about tranny. I know I don't like being called one. When it comes down to it, I prefer to just be referred to as my intended gender unless me being transsexual is relevant to the conversation.
