That is hard to answer since I don't know them or what they like. I would naturally say a rose because it is my favorite plant and someone else here on answers will have another suggestion. Therefore, this is one question you will have to answer on your own. Start by asking, do they even like to garden? My suggestion would be for you to do a little investigating to find out what kind of plantings they are interested in and then you can decide from there. And, if all else fails, pick something you really like that way you will have chosen something that is of you to give them.

First check with a local nursery or lawn and garden center with knowledgeable people who can tell you what types of trees or plants do well in the area/climate where your friends live.

Think about your friends and their lifestyle. It may help you determine if they'd appreciate a practical plant over a decorative one. Do they like working in the yard? Are they going to mind raking extra leaves in the fall? Will they mind spending time pruning a beautiful flowering shrub? Are they very busy having little time for yard work? If you choose a tree, will your friends be irritated by acorns, gumballs or pine cones in their yard? Are they they type of people who want to attract the local wildlife? Maybe you could choose a flowering plant that attracts the area birds.

Another route is to select a plant that reflects your personality and will remind your friends of you when when they see the plant in their yard. If you are cheerful, outgoing or a bit on the wild side, maybe something with brightly colored flowers would work well. Or maybe you are a reliable friend who is strong and supportive of your friends at all times. Maybe a solid oak tree offering plenty of shade is representative of your friendship.

My personal Midwest favorite - a hard maple tree. Their fall colors are beautiful and require little attention.

Any plant you give them would be great. Its the intent that is important not the type of plant.
You may want to see if you can find out weather or not they plan on doing any outside landscaping or not. Then get them something to add to their plan.
Or just go with a plant for them to keep indoors.

I would offer a White pine. Their elegant trees and easy to care for. You can also go with the Japanese Maple. Their attractive just often not as long living as a pine and you did say for years to come.
