I guess what I'm asking, is how far does electricity travel in a body of water?

It depends on amperage. And how quickly it can find a ground source to absorb the electricty.

you would probably do better asking this in physics
Its just trying to get to the ground, but i don't think electricity can travel in a direct line in water. I'm not sure thou.

The charge will diminish as the cube of the distance from contact point.

but it will not go for far i think but if you drop a hair dryer think about the creature that live's there .
