Both are the same. I've had PCs, laptops, and servers from both and they were fine. Macs are fine, too. It all depends on what you want to do, your idea of style, and $.

Both are good, but price competition is so important today that both take shortcuts. I think Gateway uses more 'standard' components so it's a little easier to upgrade, but then not as many people upgrade computers these days 'cos they're so cheap you just buy another one. HP is also pretty good.
I have a little neighborhood computer shop where I get a new computer every 3-4 years. They put together a computer just for me, to my specs. They start with an Intel motherboard and use all good stuff, and it costs about what a Dell or Gateway would cost.

They are very comparable as far as price and specs. That is, running similar systems from each vendor and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
My advice would be to buy something from Circuit City or Best Buy (in my area CC is better for computers). This way you can ask a live person questions about which is best for you.
It used to be that the computers CC/BB sold were junk but they now sell HP/Compaq which are every bit as good as Dell/Gateway and very price competitive if not lower.

I'd say neither. Dell's are horrible. If you could only pick between the two then get Gateway. But even Gateway has problems. I would highly recommend HP. They make some of the best computers.

Dell, just dont buy the cheap ones. Go for the midgrade or if you can buy them through small business.
