Six Flags is a chain comprising MANY amusement parks throughout the US. Many of these amusement parks were separately and privately owned before Six Flags came along and bought them out and changed the name to Sixflags. The previous names that these individual amusement parks had varied by location and individual amusement park. For example, the one in NJ was previously called Great Adventure, and the one in Illinois was called Great America.

The Six Flags in Texas, however, was always called Six Flags from the beginning. It opened in 1961 and has kept its name throughout the years as Six Flags became a chain that acquired more and more amusement parks throughout the country. (FYI, the Six Flags in Texas is the one featured in the theme song for the Banana Splits Show)
