do not get Toshiba, they overheat and are unreliable, i dunno about hp... but dells are probably most popular

T7300 > T5300 because it has 4mb cache instead of 2mb (dont wanna get technical on you but it's faster)

read this laptop buying guide

i'd suggest dell inspiron or latitude or lenovo thinkpad if you wanna spend less than 1000... the e1405 deal on the left side of that page on the sidebar is pretty good ($599 after coupon code, which you have to input)

In Canada Toshiba is one of the most reliable laptops.

If you are in a major city Dell is also a good choice. The further away you are from a major city the less satisfactory the service becomes with Dell.

HP make very good Laptops

Lenovo, which was IBM, are not as reliable as the others.

Core duo or Core 2 duo is your choice; not much difference in price.

Do some research on google and/or yahoo search engines. Look for blogs on each model you are interested in.
