As far as size, I'm 5'8" and had a 15 h horse, she was perfect for me. A quarterhorse is one of the best all around breeds, but Morgans are also good for english, or arabs or TB's. These breeds are also good for endurance if you're interested in cross-country. As far as age, you want something with sense, but also stamina and learnability. 8 - 12 is a great age for that. Be prepared to make an initial investment of at least $3000.00, plus any training it or you may need for what you want to do. Good Luck!

Why not loan a horse with a friend for a few months and see how you get on as there is a lot to looking after and owning a horse it is not a five minute job it take several hours a day to look after one properly, they are not cheap to keep either it not just livery to pay there is food, hay, shoeing, vets, tack grooming etc.and if you are thinking of doing cross country [eventing ] there are the entry fee's and also the transport to get there and back, i just think if you go in to part loan this will not only give you some experience in having to look after a horse but all so give you the feel of jobs and hour to be spent.

i dont think this is a question that can b answered that easily. i'm 5ft and 100lb n ave a 17hh hanovarian, n my mums about 168lb and rode a 14hh Welsh! wot sort of size/type do you normally ride? how much jumping/what sort of height do you want to be able to jump? do u personally prefer the finer, daintier tb's/warmbloods that are also usually worse doers, or do you prefer the heavier cobs/natives that are generally easier to look after? do you have any experience with young horses and, if so, do you want to have to put the time into a young horse or do you just want something that is already produced that you can just get on with riding? It really is a personal choice, but your instructor will be a great help to you in making a choice as they know your riding level/experience and so will be able to suggest a good height/breed/age.

A good TB/QH cross is nice & most are not too expensive

Warmblood
Hanoverian

But be careful. At 18, you'll be wanting to go to college - you may not have time or money to give to a horse.

Its what size you feel comfortable on, I am only 5ft and weigh in at 9 st. I have 2 Anglo Arabs,16.2 & 15.2. Both have beautiful paces, fast and have good spread for jumping.

Quarterhorse, Pinto or an Arab/Mustang breed 14 to 15.2 hands and about 10 years old should suit you fine, don't forget to wear your hat!.
