I just started a paypal account and received a payment. It asked me if I would accept payment, so I did. Then it diercted me to a screen and asked if I wanted to sign up for something that would allow me to accept credit cards. There was no way around this step, so I accepted. Now they charged me a fee for the transaction. Isn't there a way you can set it up for no credit cards, andmake the transactions free?

If you have the paypal logo with the credit card logos then you are required to accept credit cards. There is a way to set up the paypal account to only work by taking money out of a bank account and not hit you with a fee. However, most people do not like to do that. Most want to pay with their credit cards. If they try to pay with a credit card and your account won't allow it, but you had a credit card logo on your auction (which is pretty much put there automatically), then you are breaking some rules.

Also, it is not in Paypal's best interest to promote people not paying for the service it provides. Paypal is a company and wants to make a profit.

Unfortunately, no. PayPal takes a percentage of all (seller) transactions. How else would they make money?
