Im looking for a shrub or bush type plant for a shady area at my house. I need something that is drought tolerant and gopher/deer resistant. Does such a plant exist? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Helleborus is perfect for you. It is a flowering shrub and It is shade tolerant, deer resistant, and suited to zone 9 which is your zone.

Try hydrangeas, I can't exactly say the are drought tolerant. But they are deer resistant, produce beatiful flower heads and are definitely shade tolerant. Try your local garden center, not the Lowe's or Home Depot type places, but a good garden center. (P.S. most plants after the 2nd - 3rd year adjust to the amount of water supplied by nature all on their own.)

Well, my suggestion is to go to your local or favorite nursery and ask them about the navtive plants of your area. By doing this you don't introduce non-native species into your space which can cause major problems later on. What are you are in, what habits are there, and what would benifit your space and environment should all be taken into account when choosing plants for your yard. We have a deer problem here but mainly they go after our vegie garden and the two fruit trees.
