In 1969 three Apollo missions went to the Moon (the answer earlier is right that there were four Apollo flights in 1969, but one of them, Apollo 9, was an Earth orbit only flight to test the LM).

In May 1969 Apollo 10 took Tom Stafford, John Young and Gene Cernan to the Moon for a 'dress rehearsal' flight. They did not land.

Apollo 11, launched July 16th 1969, took Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin 'Buzz' Adrin to the Moon. Armstrong and Aldrin made the first landing on the Moon and spent a couple of hours walking around on the surface.

In November 1969 Apollo 12 went to the Moon with Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon and Al Bean. Conrad and Bean landed on the Moon while Gordon remained in orbit.

So, nine people went to the Moon, four of them walked on it, and all retruned safely. In fact two of them (Young and Cernan) would return to the Moon in 1972 aboard Apollo 16 and 17 respectively.

There were 3 United States missions to the Moon in 1969. Apollo 10, 11, and 12.

Apollo 10 was launched in May 1969. It carried 3 astronauts: Commander Thomas Stafford, Commander Module Pilot John W. Young, and Lunar Module Pilot Eugene Cernan. They became the second crew to orbit the Moon following the Apollo 8 mission. Apollo 9 did not perform a Lunar Orbit.

Apollo 11 was launched July 1969. It carried 3 astronauts: Commander Neil Armstrong, Commander Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Aldrin. As Collins orbited the Moon in the Command Module, The Lunar Module landed and Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the surface.

Apollo 12 was launched November 1969. It carried 3 astronauts: Commander Pete Conrad, Commander Module Pilot Richard Gordon, and Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean. As Gordon orbited in the Command Module, the Lunar Module landed and Conrad and Bean walked on the surface.

Your grammer indicates that you are quite young. 38 years have passed since 1969. This means that all persons over the age of 38 were alive during the 1969 Apollo missions.

There were 9 guys who made the trip to the moon, and 4 guys who actually walked on the moon in 1969.

Apollo 10, in May, carried John Young, Tom Staffard, and Gene Cernan. They did a 'dress rehearsal' for the landing, separating the Lunar & command modules, and descending to about 50,000 feet over the moon. They never landed, though.

Apollo 11 landed in July, with Neil Armstrong & Edwin Aldrin walking on the moon. Michael Collins remained in orbit.

Apollo 12 landed in November with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean walking on the moon. Dick Gordon remained in orbit.

"Astronauts" is the word for them.

The answer to "how many" depends what you mean by "went to the Moon." In 1969, there were two missions (Apollo 11 & 12) that landed on the Moon. In those missions, 1 man stayed in orbit while 2 actually landed, so there were 4 men who actually walked on the Moon in 1969.

If you just mean going to the Moon and not necessarily landing, the answer is 12. There were a total of 4 Apollo missions in 1969, 3 men on each, and 3 * 4 = 12. [I messed up here - see my correction below. Thanks to Jason T - Nice catch and thumbs up to you, Sir! :-)]

EDIT - correcting myself: Apollo 9 didn't go to the Moon, but did lunar module testing in Earth orbit. So for 1969 it was 3 Apollo missions going to the moon * 3 men on each = 9.

edd - if what you want to know is the NAMES of the people who went to the Moon, you need to say that more clearly in your questions. I hope you're not giving thumbs down to people who just said "astronauts" because they misunderstood you. All the same, hope that helps!

There were a total of twelve, and they were called astronauts. Actually, I was born before then, how would you know anyway.
