Well first thing is there is no accurate way to tell if the belt is snaped for it is hidden under your water pump most the time, which also can cause a problem if the gasket has broken and if you are doing it your self- 85- 120 dollars plus the time it takes to get to it, if you take it somewhere -600-1000 dollars, most likely it not the timeing belt, for most are chains and hard to break. Good Luck

Luckily for you your car has what is called a non interference engine meaning if your belt broke none of the valves and pistons hit each other. The belt itself is not expensive, around $30-50 depending on where you buy. As the others said the labor is the expensive part with the dealer being the last resort. The belt tensioner should be checked also when changing the belt for loose or worn bearings.

The timing belt is rather expensive $60.- $90.00. The total cost at an independent shop would run close to $200.00.
If you were to go to a Mazda dealer their labor rate is $75. - $85.00 per hour and the cost would be $250. - $275.

Taking the vehicle to a shop is super expensive and will cost you around $1,000. The problem is that if your timing belt did indeed break, then your entire transmission is going to be completely bunk. And most shops get you to replace your water pump at the same time as the timing belt due to the fact that you have to remove the water pump in order to get to the timing belt.
If you discover that your timing belt did break, you should probably look into a new vehicle. What will happen is that your car will run fine for a few weeks, maybe even months, but then it will start to overheat as your timing belt will affect the water pump and you'll have to replace again, only this time, it won't fix it for as long...and eventually your transmission will throw the death code. The car will have less than a year left of life and you will throw money continually at it during the year!
Save yourself the money and invest in a new vehicle!
