I just don't get it, does this mean these people's average scientific knowledge is stuck 500 years in the past?

The question was threatening, and most avoided it. So the results were skewed.

no. That only meant that this particular man was not informed in astronomy. Asking audience to help with winning a large sum of money is never a good idea anywhere in the world: people are very selfish creatures. They also enjoy having fun at your expense. I also wonder what would be American President's answer to the same question, if he still has his doubts about evolution...
