Rabbits need hay constantly. If anyone in your family has hay allergies, this may be a count against a rabbit. Given these two choices, my suggestion is a bird. They are easier, cleaner and friendlier. For a first bird I suggest a parakeet (budgieregar) or a cockatiel . They are not try-on pets, they require a commitment. I suggest reading a good resource book on each kind of pet to find which type fits your family.

Depends if you want a cuddly animal or a learning animal. I would probably get a bird because if you get the kind that talk, you can teach it. But, I think the best pet ever is a hamster. You can cuddle with it and pick it up and make and buy toys. It is a easy pet to take care of. Maybe a bird is too much and rabbit supplies are a little on the expensive side. I got my hamster and all of the acceseries and a cage for only $30 and its so cute and fat!

Hmm... Well, under what my dad said, who once owned three birds, and my ex boyfriend, who has a very annoying bird, sometimes birds are loud, and messy, which wasn't uncommon for either of the sources. Though birds can be trained, they are noisier than a bunny, so if you don't like noise, get a rabbit. If you don't mind noise, the sound of flapping wings, or risking to forget to close that cage door, and not clipping the wings... get a bird.
My choice is actually a rabbit. I've had one for about seven years, and unlike what one of the above answerers said, they do love to cuddle, provided you raise them with care. They are actually very sweet, and not very noisey. Perfect if you want a fluffy companion. Personally, my family has come to think that the mini-lops are one of the more friendly breed. For a lop, I'd suggest either a mini-lop, or a holland lop. Other than that, a dutch or a mini-rex have always seemed friendly, though nothing seemed to beat the mini-lop. They are supposed to have hay, but it isn't as necessary as people seem to think, as I don't usually give my rabbit hay, and she seems to be extremely healthy for her age.
And, to the comment above, you CAN take a rabbit outside. I do my rabbit. All you need is a small-ish cat harness, and a leash. They love to run around and explore! And a breeder that I met at the fair a few years ago stated that you can leash train a rabbit, to follow alongside you like a dog. That surely would take some training, but it is always an option.
As for biting/scratching, I'd say that they can be even at times, depending on how well you care for the animal.
Personally, I'd suggest a bunny.

Ooh, a bird I say. I have had a bird (Cockateil) and a bunny (both were birthday presents too actually :P), and I find birds are better pets. They have huge personalities and are really smart so you can teach them how to talk and such. My rabbit was basically just good for cuddles and being cute, my bird is constantly trying to get my attention, playing with things, and also goes mad for cuddles, and is ridiculously trusting of me. I would say rabbits and birds have almost the same level of care and cost of care as each other. You feed one pellets and water, feed the other seeds and water, and just clean both their cages out weekly. If you get a bird, make sure it is handraised, they cost a bit more, but if it isn't hand raised it wont let you touch it, bond with you, learn anything, etc.

well I have had both. A bird is great but you really need to read up on both of these types of animals for care and see which fits best with what you are willing to provide.
Birds are friendly and wonderful and a bunny will bond with you and really love you if you give it the time it deserves. Bunnies are a little more hardy than birds too and birds like to sing like crazy early in the a.m. my vote would be no pet until you have really read up on how to care for them and then decide.
good luck and happy birthday.

I suggest a rat. My daughter had several over the years. They rarely bite, are very smart (had one that would retrieve aluminum foil balls), have a personality, can recognize you when you enter a room, much cleaner than the bunny or bird, cheap to keep. We tried the bunny and bird route, but both are VERY messy and bunnies can be very smelly if the cage is not big enough or cleaned often enough. Both the bunny and bird can be fun and rewarding, but mom probably won't want to clean up after either one of them. How about a fish?

baby bunnies are cute, and are quick breeders (pregnancy about 31 days i think). BUT remember, that bunny will grow up quickly.
baby birds are a little hard. it depends what type of bird youre getting. a parrot or a "parrot type" birds are fun, but not easy (they also can bite hard an draw blood). parrot food can cost alot, since they dont eat those tiny tiny seeds. they also need a large cage. they make large messes, BEWARE.
a small bird isnt that hard, but they usually arent much fun. (depends the bird type) small birds eat seeds. they can make big messes, but thats if you dont clean the cage often. and at a baby bird its also hard. you will need special baby bird formula and must be there to feed it.
back to bunnies, they are cute. they can also make big messes, but an outdoor hutch or litter box training is good. (they can beindoors, or out.)
if u want to breed them: bunnies can mate pretty much anytime. and can get pregnant again after her babies are born. Bird eggs sometimes dont hatch, and the birds personality (niceness) can change to aggressive/protective.

First off, remember any pet is like a child, you have to make sure to feed and give them water and love and respect. The other question would be, do you live in apartment or a house. Remember, there will be vet bills, if your pet gets sick and so fourth. I would suggest maybe a kitten, if you live in a house, but it also depends on what your mom thinks.

Birds get messy. You need to clean there water and cage all the time. They spit seeds all over the floor even if you get a cage skirt. Bunnies just eat and poop.....you need to clean there cages too but not quit as messy as a bird.....go for bunny.
