A coworker and I got into a verbal altercation today at work. When I tried to walk away, she punched me in the face -- above my left eye. I have a huge welt above my eye brow, a red/black bruise forming in the corner of my eye, and a scratch below my eye. The force was strong enough that when she hit me, she broke my glasses that I was wearing in two.

I'm at home now. I filed a police report on her at work. My boss sent both of us home for the day because the verbal argument was two-sided and because I was so stressed afterwards.

I'm wondering ... should I go to the ER to get my eye looked at? It is definitely hurting and I have a bad headache, but I expect it to hurt because she hit me REALLY hard. I'm 7 months pregnant. Thing is, I was just at the ER two days ago because I was in a fender-bender car accident and everything was fine with me then. I'm semi-embarressed to walk back in for another issue. But if it is advised, then I should probably go. Opinions?

Thanks for all your answers and support. Just got back from ER. They said there's no lasting damage, but I'll probably have a black eye in a day that may last 1-2 weeks. They were also able to medically document any physical damage on me in case I need that for the charges I've filed on her. Thanks for all your suggestions!

As for hitting her back... it took me so totally by suprise that I just walked out of the room and immediately called the police. I've NEVER had anyone hit me in my entire life, so my reaction wasn't to retaliate. My company does not have an HR dept as I work for a very small company of only 6 employees. Due to the setup, I am technically considered "self-employed". My boss has fired the other girl though. Thanks again guys!

Go and have your eye looked at.. If she hit you hard enough to break your glasses then chances are she could have hit you hard enough to do some damage to the eye/eye socket.. It is good that you filed a police report. What ever you do dont drop the charges.. No one should hit just because they are upset at a person.. Your baby will be just fine, after all your face has nothing to do with the pregnancy "that totally sounds hatefull but I promise it's not meant that way". The ER wont think anything of you coming in to have something like this checked out.. If you are able to you could see about getting in to see a regular doctor at a clinic or Urgent Care Center.. Maybe that would help ease the embarassment.. Best of Luck..

I suggest you go to an eye doctor instead. (not the kind that just dispenses glasses. The real eye doctor)

The reason I say this is, ER is a crisis management. If you are not in life or death situation, you can get better care at regular doctors. If you suspect bone fracture, that's different, but if you are concerned about your eyes, ER is not the best place to go.

I don't also see why it would affect pregnancy, other than the stress factor. I'm sorry it happened to you, but I think your real concern is a possible (although unlikely) physical damage to your own body, not the baby.

I wouldn't go to the er. It is for emergencies. If you have family doctor, or even your gyn / ob could probably tell you if you have a concussion or something more serious. It is probably just a bruise. However I would go to a dr. for the record for the lawsuit if you press charges
And... I would press charges if the attack from the co worker was unprovoked and if it is a serious injury.

Check with your HR department. They may have a procedure for you to follow. I know when something happens at my job where someone need medical attention, we are encouraged to go to the clinic to see a certain Dr before going to the ER. Given the circumstances, you may want to procede in accordance with company policy.

Yes, I'd go to the ER, or an urget care if you have one in your area. I'd also make her pay the medical bills as well, through court if you have to. No one cares how many times you've been there, I've had to go 3 times in a week once when I was sick, that's what they are there for.

I think you should definitely get it checked out, I don't believe that it could possibly affect your pregnancy, but for your own peace of mind, I think it would be best. I'm sorry to hear that you were punched; that argument must have been serious or that lady crazy.

Good luck, and congratulations on your baby!!

Yeah i would go just to make sure your eye socket isnt damaged. She could have possibly given you a minor concussion as well. Better safe than sorry. I am sure your baby is just fine, but this is about moms health and wellbeing. Unhealthy mommy, unhealthy baby!

see this is where you are a much better person than i... because if i was pregnant and someone hit me ANYWHERE i'd hit them with the nearest object.... so she would've had a stapler imprint on the side of her head... doesnt matter what was said you shouldnt hit a pregnant woman...what if you fell back and hit your stomach??

you should go anyways to make sure you donthave a concussion or soemthing that might becoem a problem.. you have to take care of you in order to taek care of the baby
