Oops, had a paris moment! Oxygen pump I mean...

If I change the water weekly, without an aid of an air or oxygen pump, can the betta survive?

The betta I saw at the shop looks something liek this: http://www.bettatalk.com/catalog_new.htm
What do u guys think?

Yes Betta's can survive without a air stone in the tank. The more expensive the Betta is the better quality it is. The ones you pasted are show quality Betta's. Most people buy the Veil Tails because they are inexpensive, but if you want one that is just eye stopping go for the better breed. Most people purchase those types of fish for breeding so they can sell them. I'm sure you could find some a little cheaper but they might not have the exact finnage or tail types.

I don't know who told you they can. That's not accurate really. Fish extract oxygen from the water through thier gills, so all fish use oxygen, just that Betta's have a special organ that allows them to use some oxygen from atmospheric air is all. But this is not thier primary means of breathing. Where are you getting from this Betta you like is $40.00. I got mine for well under $10.00 at Petland discounts. Ask them if they can demonstrate how this is a rare breed, otherwise, it's just way over priced.

Which one out of that listing? Well Betta's can survive in bowls, but they won't thrive as good. Betta's should be treated basically like any other tropical. I have a set up here at work, 3 gallon, heated and filtered, I think I spent a total of $70.00? Not sure, was awhile ago. I added in small decorations, plants, the heater, and a couple White Clouds to keep him company. I get people comming by all the time to stop and look too. Does that help figure how much to spend? I'm figuring when you say $40.00 you meant the Betta. I don't have any air stone or bubbles in mine, and they all doing just fine.

Betta's can survive without water because they can breathe air but they will only survive until they dry up and about the fish costing $40 that's a total rip off unless it comes with at least a 2 gallon tank and filter and food i can get a Betta just the Betta no tank for it for 4 bucks at the pet store i go to Betta's need a minimum of 5 gallons don't listen anybody that's telling you just to get a small bowl how would you like to be stuck in a 3 by 3 room your whole life not a very good way of living right

No they can not survive without oxygen. but, they do require less oxygen then most fresh water fish, as they retract it from the surface. Get a fish bowl or small betta tank that has a top with small holes in it . They have some that are great for an office that are less likely to spill.

I'm not sure what kind of betta is worth $40 so I cant say whether or not it can survive like normal cheap bettas. As far as the normal betta goes though, yes it can survive without oxygen as long as its the only one in the tank. There is enough oxygen in the water and air mixing in the water to keep it alive. Its just like a goldfish!

Yes, then can survive without aeration (oxygen pump). There are a lot of fancy varieties to choose from now, like Halfmoons, Crowntails, Plakats, Doubletails, etc these usually cost a lot more than the veiltails that we see in the local petstores.

betas cannot survive without oxygen
they can survive without an air pump tho because they get most of their oxygen from the surface. that beta you are looking at for $40 must be a fancy one. i still buy mine for $4-$7. try another pet store. you can also get them at walmart but i dont trust theier fish because they people working do not know what they fish they are keeping are or how to keep healthy fish.

First of all betta can't survive in any kind of small cup or bowl, or like somebody put it the other day, they CAN'T survive just in a "teacup"
The need space just like all the other fish do

You're suppose to buy a MINIMUM tank of 2.5 gallon with Filter and Heater, other things you need, water conditioner, a gravelsiphon and thermometer, recommended at least one live plant because they really love to rest on them

If you put a betta in a bowl you shorten his life dramatically, like up to 2 years, but if you put him in the minimum tank and take proper care of him, he can live up to 7 years

Do weekly partial waterchanges of 25% with a gravelsiphon to keep the water clean

And I think you wanted to write maybe $4 and not $40?

Hope that helps
Good luck

They need very little oxygen or space. Change out the water every week and make sure there's enough surface area for him to grab some air if he wants.
At Petsmart you can get them for about $5
