My department requires me to leave my car running if it is not at the police station. Because if we leave our light bars on and turn off the engine, we may kill the battery and then we are USELESS

David was correct. The Lights require a lot of juice from the battery and the ambulance or police officers do not want to run the risk of having an emergency and not being able to start the vehicle because of a dead battery. And the departments usually require them to do so.

It's a CONSPIRACY to cause more green house gasses and cause global warming, because ppolice and ambulance drivers are members of the Teutonic Knights Templar and the New World Order, and they all support Bush and they all DON'T believe in global warming!
WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

The ambulance drivers want to kill and eat your babies! Aaaaaaaaah!

They are often running high powered lights that would otherwise kill the battery in the vehicle. It takes very little fuel to idle the engine and keep the battery charged.

An ambulance is usually a sign of an emergency meaning they don't have time to stop and shut off their engine because every second counts....

And no it's not illegal if that's what you're getting at

In an emergency, they need to be able to move quickly. This is more important than saving gas.
