Both...
A computer is a big energy hog. And frequent turning on and off can result in a reduced lifespan. If you are just turning it off at night and back on during the day, you'll be fine. They were designed to do that. If you were turning it on and off multiple times during the day, you wouldn't necessarily see any difference, just that a computer that might normally wear out in, say, 5 years would die in 4 1/2 years.
Long story short...turn it off at night to save money. You'll probably replace that computer due to new technology before it dies.

Unless there is some odd secret I've never heard of, if your computer is completely shutdown b4 unplugging it, and all other equipment attached to it is shut down/off, there is no good reason why it would effect anything in a negative way. I used to do it all the time when I first got a computer. All that does, the way I understand it, is completely remove all power to it. It also protects it from potential power surges during unforeseen storms as well. An alternative option would be to use a surge protector with an on/off switch and just switch it off instead of plugging and unplugging each day/night. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! I think dad wins this one. :)

By unplugging your computer there is no way you could damage your sons (or any other computer/device on the network). However, you could potentially burn-out your power supply on your computer. You know how sometimes when you plug things in, there's a small spark? Well, sometimes that can been enough to burn-out your power supply. The more you plug-in & un-plug, more chances you have of this happening. If your power supply has a power switch on the back- use it. Otherwise I'd recommend buying a surge protector (power bar) with a switch and using that.
By-the-way...your husband should be most concerned with the Televisions.

Hi there.
I assume you are saying that your husband is plugging the main power cable from the cpu every night?
As long as the computer has shut down properly, and no more electricity is reaching the CPU, it is certainly alright to unplug the cable.. or any cable, for that matter.
Remember, shutdown and off the system completely first.
Hope this answers.

Turn it off, don't unplug it. Current usage when turned off is either zero or near zero, depending on the computer you have. If it is near zero, then there is a reason for the miniscule current to continue to flow. Unplugging it repeatedly won't blow up the motherboard, but isn't good for it, either.
