fire, intruder, etc. Our house is two floors and the bedrooms are on the second floor. In case of an emergency what things should I have up there to be prepared. I want us to be able to easily escape/exit from a window. We have a 10 month old and a 3 yr old, if that makes any difference.

You can install escape ladders in specific rooms around the top floor. They install between the studs under windows and become virtually invisible. Also keep flashlights in several areas upstairs. You should have a phone upstairs that is not cordless in case the electricity goes out. The "old" phones will still work. I keep a gun up stairs and downstairs in case of unwanted intruders but I understand that does not settle well with everyone. Also, rehearse your plans. Allow your 3 year old to climb down the ladder. Practice carrying the weight of your infant without carrying him. It is important to rehearse your action plans so you do not have to think in an emergency. We do this in our house hold. We have designated spots for several emergencies to include tornados.

I don't know if they're still available. But I remember when I was a kid, the family had a ladder made of metal rungs linked together by chain, with a couple of grapples at the top that you could hook over a window to hold it. You certainly will want a couple of harnesses to help you carry the kids.

Alternately, if the issue really worries you, you could have ladders attached to the house outside the window, either right on the wall itself or down from little balconies outside the window.

Good luck, and here's hoping you never need to escape!
