You should call the hospital and ask, but walking short distances shortly after birth is just fine for a new mother. When I had my babies, the next day, I was walking laps around the hospital on doctor's orders. It helps you lose excess fluid and improves your circulation and...um...bowel health.
Anyway, I know for a fact my dr. would say it was perfectly okay for you to walk 5 minutes home from the hospital with baby in a travel system. But you should ask just to be certain.

Your probably ypung and healthy! You may or may not feel like walking. And yet it is so exciting when people stop you to ask about your new baby! HOWEVER, baby's are very suseptable to germs. You should not even consider taking him out for 1-2 weeks at least. You want whats best for him right! Take some money with you for a cab or find a friend who can pick you up. I dont think that the hospital would allow you to walk home! And most wont even let you leave the hospital without baby strapped into it's car seat. Having a car or not usually isnt the issue as far as they are concerned.
It is probably as simple as calling the maternity ward at your hospital or asking you doctor what he thinks! Best Wishes

Im not sure if its different at other hospitals but i had my first baby last october, it was an emergency c-section and i was released after 2 days. At no point did i have a wheelchair even though its difficult to walk and the nurses walked me to the main entrance to the building and left me there to make my own way, wether it be walk or in a car.
I think if you feel up to it then make sure your partners with you and walk home, if you've had a c-section though i wouldn't advise walking home as you'll feel like you've been kicked by a huge horse and will be very weak and shaky so i'd say get a friend or family member to pick you up in that case.
The best thing though is phone the community midwifes and ask them.

In my opinion, you should wait to see how you're feeling (and weather conditions the day you go home) before deciding. It sounds like you have a travel system (pushchair which includes infant car seat) so you can easily go with either option (walk or taxi).
When I delivered my baby 15 months ago, we simply walked ~3 minutes to a bus stop near the hospital, and then carried our newborn on to the bus with us to get home. (I carried him against my chest inside my puffy coat as it was a bit chilly; this was April in London). I felt fine and everything went absolutely fine (I wasn't feeling sore yet -- must've been the adrenaline and emotional high) and so it was neither stressful, strenuous or worrisome. We actually quite enjoyed it. But if I had been feeling sore or rough in any way, I surely wouldn't have pushed it or wanted to expose our newborn to any undue stress.
So see how it goes, but don't rule anything out or form any preconceived notions. Just be sure you're prepared for either case/contingency and enjoy the special day!

well the way it worked in my hospital was ...... the midwife pushed the baby in her cot down to the main hospital doors then and only then was me or my partner aloud to hold the baby and put her in a car seat after the baby leaves the hospital doors the baby is your responsibility,,,,, but think of it this way you dont no whats going to happen at labour yet you could have a c-section and you wont want to walk just that 5 mins another point is will it be raining? if so do you really want to go home after having a baby and start changing clothes and getting warmed up another thing to think of is the baby .....would be nice for baby to get used to his pram ... i let my daughter lay in her pram in the house so she could get used to it give her a push around the house how would you like to come from the warmth of your mums tummy into a goldfish bowl they call a crib then into a pushchair and pushed across pot holes bumps and hearing the noice of every passing car....
ask a family member to pick you up

i've had 3 children and no one has ever asked me how i'm taking them home. you get discharged on the ward and your on your own from there. i'm assuming you live in the uk? their usually so busy its a quick goodbye and good luck. if you have an easy birth then the walk should be ok but if you end up having forceps or a caesarean its going to seem like a marathon so a taxi might be better. at the end of the day you have the right to insist on whatever you want. you could always threaten to block a bed! good luck

Do you have parents or anyone that can pick you up? If not (depending on the weather) , they would probably prefer you walk , because they like to check to make sure you have a secure infant car seat in any vehicle. A taxi isn't a permanent situation. It would be much better though if you had someone you are close to help you home. Trust me.. I've done it twice and it makes it MUCH easier on you.

A five minute walk from the hospital after you deliver your baby isnt exactly logical. Chances are you'll be discharged from the hospital a day or two after you deliver and you'll hardly be in any condition to walk even across the street.
Trust me, you will WANT the taxi.

Talk it over with you docotor and you should not want to walk home after giving birth anyway. Try and arrange for a ride home even if it a taxi. You will not just have the baby but your bags as well. good luck

ive had three children and never been in a wheel chair to get taken to the door. u will get discharged from hospital then its up to you wot you do. the midwives just say if your driving make sure you have got a car seat (obvious). after my second baby i went up my mother in laws for a bar b q and everybody was shocked as i was doing every thing. it depends how you feel after birth you might not want to walk but if you do decide to walk home just make sure some one is with you. GOOD LUCK HOPE EVERYTHING GOES OK.
