Install avast! antivirus (it's free to home users, just register) and scan your computer. It should find your viruses and spyware. Also, after you install it, uninstall whatever antivirus you had before and make sure your firewall is turned on. Good luck!

Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender are excellent (and free) options. They check for malware which includes spyware and tracking cookies. I definately recommend you download all three and run them reguarly. They are great tools to help keep your computer running smoothly.

Make sure you have some sort of a firewall running as well. There is one built into Windows XP. Go to start, control panel, and then Security Center to make sure that it is enabled.

After you have scanned for viruses and malware, use Windows defender software explore (under tools) r to see what is running on your computer on startup. You can end stupid processes that get on there. If you are not sure what a process does, google it and see if it is necessary. Defender will tell you if it shipped with the operating system or not. However, don't kill all programs that do not ship with the operating system because that can cause issues. Like I said, make sure you google it, if you are still unsure....leave it alone.

Also, go to add or remove programs and uninstall any programs you do not need or use. Once again, if you are unsure google it, or leave it alone.

After you do this, run the disk defragmenter (start, accessories, system tools). This moves the files together for faster access. This does take a while to run depending how much you have on your hard drive and the speed of your computer. You may want to start this before you go to bed.

Oh, Yes!
You are infected with spyware if:

* You see too much pop-up advertisements.
* Your browser has toolbars that you haven't installed.
* Your homepage has changed (and you can't change it back).
* Other settings have changed without your permission.
* Your computer is slow.

To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you have to use an antispyware or even more. You can download a antispyware software.

If your computer is slow it's because you have too many programs running all at the same time. If you have all kinds of icons in your task bare in the bottom right corner of your screen, those are programs running. You need to shut them down and then set them to where they do not start at windows startup. That is done by going to the programs properties and telling it not to start a windows startup, or going to run and typing msconfig hit enter then go to startup tab and deselecting the programs that you do not want to start. That should help.

Spyware Blocker

This is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources. It blocks spyware before it installs.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)

Ad-Aware SE from www.lavasoft.com and XoftSpy SE from www.paretologic.com are both very good freeware products. What one misses, the other one catches. Besides adware and spyware detection and removal, they also scan for trojans and harmful registry entries, among other things.

Ad-aware and Spybot are both good programs and are free for personal PC use. You can find them both by searching Google.
