Animals are in contact with senses that humans have long abandoned. They know when storms are coming, and they know when their own death is upon them, whether from old age, disease or injury. I have no doubt that Oscar does detect a change that signals death is imminent, probably through his sense of smell.

Yes, some dogs and some cats. There are dogs who also can detect when a seizure is coming on. When I get depressed; my dog gets depressed and it shows all over her just as it shows on me.
