The tree is "matter" therefore it has mass. When mass falls, it makes a thud!

And if ur over 21;i say this;
You should know that this and other so-called questions,
( yes, so-called because they are "playtime" things, which,
incidentally, can easily become a group norm-one where
if one hasnt heard the answer one is a stupid outsider)
have been asked ad nauseam, meaning there should be
a history-check as well as a spelling check button,by
which newcomers can learn from others.
And i almost said mistakes, there(see the late, critical scholar
Sir karl Popper for critically learning-from-our-Mistakes)
but i guess its not a mistake to ask simple questions on a
part-of-a-site where philosophy students "band together"!
Anyway, this question has a host of similar and darwinian
tinged properties, like "are you being watched 24hrs-a-day?"
(yes and no) "why would someone watch someone else 24
hrs-a-day? (may be a suspect). Have you EVER done anything suspect?
And so on; Its hard to know whether these are all darwinian
language games- if we had the late ludwig Wittgenstein and
Darwin here with us,we could see from them what these
co-leaders thought.
(And reading thro the other answers, this occured to me and
perhaps others- are there schools and colleges and so-called teachers out there who are teaching this incorrect
nonsense that such a tree "makes no sound". If there are they should be exposed; Exposed and told that such nonsense leads directly to the nonsense that where man is
not around, things cannot occur-im thinking of climate change
due to the burning of fossil fuels, and other real environmental
damage)

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, it does make a sound. I got to this conclusion by actually looking up the definition of sound, which is a disturbance of mechanical energy (potential energy, like a roller coaster on top of the track, and kinetic energy, like a waterfall) that moves through matter (air, water, steel, plasma, etc.) as a wave. Even if means we cant hear it or it isn't possible to hear it (low or high frequency sounds).

This question has always annoyed me. Are we humans are so stuck on our own superiority that we would question whether or not a tree falling would make a sound simply because one of us was not there to hear it? Of course it would make a sound, the same exact sound as it would make if we were to hear it. Contrary to the belief of many, the world does not revolve around us and that includes falling trees and noise.

just because no one hears it doesnt mean it didnt make a sound. it may be the reality for everyone that they didnt hear the sound, but then again people's realities are limited to where they are at a given moment, and that moment may have had them nowhere near the fallen tree in the forest. people's realities are limited, and those may just not have included a falling tree in a forest

Of course it makes a sound. This is such an egocentric question! Even if it has to be heard by something to be considered, we are not the only species with ears! Makes me cranky... Not you, this question. Which for some reason still floats around.

No, a sound is heard. If no one is there to hear it, it's not heard. It still falls, but what it does I'm not sure.
