I've made this trip a million times, until my cousins fled LI. And a few thousand other times if you count to other parts of NY. Assuming you are driving, the quickest and most pleasant way is;

Take the Whitestone Bridge, which drops directly into the Hutchinson Pkwy, which becomes the Merritt in CT Rt15. (you will bear Rt near New Rochelle). Stay on this until you see signs before Hartford directing traffic heading to Boston. You then will do a loop around between 15, 91 back to 84. Just follow the signs for Boston, not Hartford. You will end up back on 84, which will take you right to the Mass Pike Rt. 90, which will take you right into Boston.

This trip, with approx 2 short stops should take you about 4 hours depending how far out on the Island you are (Levittown = 4 hours, a little less with short stops and a lead foot...but be careful of that in CT).

While some prefer to go Rt. 95, keep in mind it is a truck route and also the road most tourists know. I find that even though the Merritt is a 2 lane road it almost always moves, has no trucks, and as I said I almost always make much better time on it. 95 is good for an extra 1/2 hour at least. Just pull up a map and you'll see how they are nearly parallel for a good portion of the trip. So if you hit traffic hell it is easy to cut over to the other one. Plus the Merritt has small, easy on/off rest stops that you can get in and out of very quickly.

If you need gas try to hold off until you hit MA. The large rest plaza's on the Ma Pike are always MUCH cheaper than CT! Also if there is a problem on the Whitestone you can take the Throgs Neck and cut over, but it's not as direct, so unless it's major you'll usually make it up via the Whitestone trip.

Hope this helps. And you won't be touching Manhattan at all. And on the trip back, the signage in CT is weird, so after Hartford, be sure to look for the exit that says Rt 15 Wilber Cross Pkwy (they refuse to call it the Merritt, and if you miss that you end up on 95). Long as you know to look for it, it's easy. Stupid but easy lol

Have a great trip!

Sure there are. There are a few and they are:

1. Fly from Laguardia Airport to Boston
2. Fly from JFK to Boston
3. There are 2 ferries that connect the North Shore to Connecticut and then drive the rest of the way.
4. Just drive - take either the westbound Northern State Parkway, westbound Southern State Parkway or westbound Long Island Expressway to the northbound Cross Island Parkway to the Throgs Neck Bridge. Go over the Bridge into the Bronx then take I-695 (Throgs Neck Expressway) northbound to I-95. Follow I-95 all the way up thru Connecticut, Rhode Island and into Massachusetts.

there are ferry's. But if you cross the Throggs Neck and head up 95 you won't hit Manhattan. Cross Island to the Throggs Neck Bridge.

You could take the ferry over to Bridgeport, CT, jump on I-95.
